The Safe Space to Be Your True Self Why Realness Matters in Business

In leadership, business, and life, we often hear messages like Fake it till you make it. But in my experience, faking it creates distance from others, from our growth, and from our peace of mind.

I’ve been reflecting on something deeply human and quietly radical in today’s world: the need for safe spaces where we can be fully, honestly ourselves.

In leadership, business, and life, we often hear messages like “Fake it till you make it.” But in my experience, faking it creates distance — from others, from our growth, and from our peace of mind.

At BIP100, our mission has always been to build a business networking community where people can take off the mask. A space where emotional honesty is not only accepted, it’s honoured.

Because real connection starts with realness.

Safe Spaces Enable True Leadership

Safe spaces are more than just friendly environments. They are emotionally intelligent communities rooted in trust and shared values. In our entrepreneur support group, we aim to be that for every member: a place where you can say, “I need help,” and be met with, “I’ve been there.”

Pretending to be perfect often shuts out the support we truly need. But vulnerability, when offered with self-respect and intention, creates:

  • Stronger relationships

  • Deeper collaboration

  • A greater capacity for growth — both personally and professionally

This is the kind of leadership we nurture in our exclusive business club,  not built on ego, but on openness.

Leading from Every Role

We are all leaders, whether in business, at home, or in our communities. Here’s how I’ve experienced leadership through different roles, perhaps you’ll recognise your own reflections in these:

As a Mother
I’ve shifted from manager to mentor. I now learn from my children as much as they learn from me. That’s not weakness, it’s love in its most respectful form.

As a Business Leader
I celebrate the skills my team brings that I don’t. They know my strengths and my triggers, and we’ve built something more powerful than hierarchy, we’ve built trust.

As a Community Leader
BIP100 is not for Thomas and I, it’s for them. Our professional development network exists to meet the emotional and learning needs of our members. When we do that, growth becomes inevitable.

As a Wife
Thirty-five years of marriage has taught me that leadership is shared. Sometimes I lead. Sometimes I rest. Our marriage leads us both,  and we honour that together.

As a Friend, Sister, Aunt
This is where I fall short most often. But when the moment truly matters, I’m there. Because presence, even in small doses, is what builds lifelong bonds.

This Week, Ponder This:

  • Where do you feel safe enough to be the real you?

  • Who gets to see the unfiltered, unpolished version of your life?

  • Are you creating that kind of safety for others?

In our business mastermind group, we remind each other often: Being real isn’t weak. It’s the strongest act of leadership there is.

In a world full of filters, automation, and performance, authenticity is the greatest gift we can give. And when we give it, we help others feel free to do the same.

That’s the real power of community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when I apply?

We'll receive your details and book a discovery call with Thomas. We want to allow 90 minutes for the call — although if it's clear we're not right, it can be shorter. We'll want to get to know you, not just your business, but how you are personally, and discover the ways we can add the most value to you.

Do I have a contract?

We ask that you aim for at least one year of BIP100 membership, paid either upfront or on our monthly plan, as it takes time to settle in and for others to see your value and you to see theirs. We are on a journey together, hopefully for a life-time. You can, however, leave after giving us one month's notice.

Why don't you have more than 100 members?

We've learned the power of deep relationships and how that can have an amazing impact on people's happiness and success. We've studied the ultimate community size to enable trust and closeness and believe 100 is the maximum you can have.

How would I settle in and meet people?

We start with a 90-minute onboarding coaching session with Penny, who records a video about you and introduces you to everyone. There's a strong culture of 1:2:1s and people are keen to get to know all new members. Plus regular Zoom events, London lunches, and in-person days to get to know people fast.

What if I dislike networking?

Networking has a reputation for elevator pitches and hustling for business — that can make many of us feel nervous. This is why we build community, not a networking group. Think of it like a village with a pub in it, with a very welcoming landlord and a friendly group of new friends.

How much does the lunch in London cost?

We run these monthly, on the 3rd Thursday, in private rooms in a 4-star London hotel. Tickets are £85 inclusive of your welcome drink, three-course lunch, VAT and service. We don't profit from these events — in fact we subsidise the cost to keep the price as low as possible.

How often should I attend events?

There is no obligation. We suggest you attend when you can as you will get huge value from them, and it's always great to see your fellow BIPPers. The Zooms are interactive too — you'll get the opportunity to ask for advice or give some.

Where are your members based?

We are international. The majority are based around the M25 in the UK, but we have members in the USA and Europe. We deliver our service across 9 timezones.

What do your members do?

Most are service-driven experts, averaging around late 40s. Some have built and exited businesses, some have recently left corporate life. All are diverse and we try to ensure there is no duplicated expertise — everyone has their niche.
